Part of the whole clean makeup movement we’ve talked about before is an increased awareness of the ingredients of one’s cosmetics. Everyone has different skin types, and certain ingredients can cause unpleasant reactions. You can read an ingredient label on a bottle of skin cream, but unless you have an intimate knowledge of your skin type and how it interacts with certain chemicals and compounds, that’s probably not going to help much. This is why the Good Face Project has launched a new app to keep you in the know about your cosmetics.

The Good Face Project is a massive database of commercial cosmetics and their ingredients. The project’s team of engineers and data scientists have personally analyzed over 45,000 cosmetic products, grading and cataloging over 80,000 individual ingredients in the process. To get these analyses to you, they’ve launched a new Good Face app that can call up explanations of any product and its ingredients instantly. Using a complex algorithm categorizing ingredients based on safety, effectiveness, and cosmetic benefits, the Good Face app can recommend an ideal skin care regimen for your skin type, as well as direct you toward great online stores.

“Each year, nearly 3,000 new beauty brands are launched in the U.S., and while there never seems to be a lack of options when it comes to makeup and skincare, there is still a major lack in regulation,” said Iva Teixeira, Co-founder and CEO of The Good Face Project. “Some of the industry’s top brands are still including ingredients like formaldehyde and carcinogens in their products, making them entirely unsafe to use, but not regulated enough to be pulled from shelves. This was the impetus for founding The Good Face Project alongside my co-founder, Lena Skliarova.
