The actress has joined the Gucci-owned company as a director.
Emma Watson sure has moved up in the world since her time as a kid in a magic school. Besides her acting accomplishments, including her recent starring role in Little Women, Watson has become renowned for her sustainability activism. She worked with Eco-Age for the Green Carpet Challenge, where she sported a Calvin Klein outfit made entirely from recycled plastic bottles, she’s become a supporter for the sustainability-checking Good on You app, and was even appointed to the Gender Equality Council advising the G-7 by French President Emmanuel Macron. With all of this activism under her belt, she’s become a prime candidate for an advisory role on the subject, which, spoilers, is exactly what she has become.
It was announced today that Watson had formally signed on with French luxury fashion brand Kering. Watson has been named chair of the board’s sustainability committee, which focuses on the company’s environmental concerns and they’re doing about it. Kering is one of the largest fashion groups in the world, second only to LVMH, so Watson’s guidance could have a significant impact on the sustainability of the fashion industry overall.
Joining Watson on the board is president of Chinese ride-sharing business Didi Chuxing, Jean Liu, as well as former CEO of investment bank Credit Suisse, Tidjane Thiam. Kering is hoping that this new group of forward thinkers can help their various fashion brands increase their sustainability and reduce their environmental impact (which would, in turn, score them some points with more environmentally-conscious consumers).
