Simple hacks to keep your garden flourishing
Keeping a tidy garden might seem like a lot of work but we reveal some of the best hacks for your home garden. Work smarter instead of harder with these easy garden hacks with common household items.
Instead of throwing away used citrus fruit peels, you can use them as seed starters that are easy to transfer into your garden bed or plant pot that will nourish the plant while growing. Using a skewer or toothpick, poke two or three holes in the bottom of the peel that you can simply place and plant when ready for transfer.
Repurpose an old wine bottle as a water feeder for bigger potted plants or backyard gardens. Take the cork of the wine bottle and poke a hole through the center with a skewer to control the gradual water flow. Fill the bottle with water, seal with pierced cork, place neck into the soil, and refill when water is low.
Use banana peels and eggshells as a nutrient-rich compost fertilizer that will help plants flourish. Banana peels are rich in sodium, calcium, magnesium, potassium, sulfur, and phosphates.
Bananas also break down at a faster rate so the nutrients are absorbed faster by plants. Eggshells are packed with calcium and is great for growing citrus.
Repurpose old water bottles or jugs as a watering can, simply poke a couple of holes in the top of the bottle lid. Just fill with water, replace the cap, and water your precious plants.
Save your seedlings suffering from getting too damp or moldy while preventing mushrooms and slime mold in your planter with cinnamon. You can also use cinnamon in your garden as a great rooting agent when applied to the stem and can prevent ant infestations.
