For when you want to smell like an infinite dark void.
All things in this world have distinctive scents. I don’t just mean certain fruits or fresh sheets, I mean particular locations and experiences. The distinctive smell of a long hike up a misty mountain. The mystifying scent of the Egyptian deserts at sunset. The cloying odor of the Bronx at rush hour. It’s these particular scents that form the true back bone of the perfume industry. But for all of these scents, you can just as easily experience them by either wearing a perfume or visiting a location. There’s one place very few folks get to visit: the vast cosmos.
A Kickstarter was launched recently for Eau de Space, a special fragrance designed by NASA to actually mimic the distinctive scents of space travel. According to the Kickstarter’s information, back in 2008, NASA originally commissioned Steve Pierce, a chemist and the founder of Omega Ingredients, to create the fragrance. The formula for Eau de Space is now owned by Matt Richmond, who sought public support to mass market it.
According to Richmond, the smell of Eau de Space has been likened by astronauts to “a mix of gunpowder, seared steak, raspberries, and rum,” though he also admits it’s a notoriously difficult scent to pin down. The Kickstarter originally launched with a goal of $1,969, but at the time of writing, it has exceeded $68,000, and with 47 days still on the clock. The campaign doesn’t have any stretch goals, but all of the money will go into effective development and marketing of the fragrance. Richmond hopes that in addition to making the fragrance a success, it’ll also prompt some new interest in STEM fields in K-12 grade school students.
“We’ve partnered with the best perfumers in the world and secured the rights to launch this product exclusively. Our team consists of top Fashion, Tech, Design, and Logistics experience — all with a desire to increase STEM through experiential education. Eau de Space is our first avenue we are exploring.”
Richmond is planning to release Eau de Space some time this coming October with a retail price of $15. Apparently, Richmond’s company-to-be is already working on a second fragrance, tentatively titled “Smell of the Moon.” I hope it smells like cheese.
