Is it vacation time yet?
The lockdowns are lifted, the restrictions are rescinded, and the safety measures are in place. One could be forgiven for thinking that the pandemic is over and it’s completely safe to go wherever you want. It is not. The pandemic is still going on, and though it’s not as bad as it was, it will probably continue to go on for at least a few more months. But, at least as far as the United States is concerned, states are opening up, and travel is once again permitted, within reason. You wanna get out of the house, and states want your sweet tourism bucks, so let’s see if we can make this work.
First, let’s consider the act of traveling itself. Do you go by car, or by plane? From a health perspective, a car is probably safer, since it’s just you and/or your family or close friends; people you trust with your health. On a plane, you gotta share with a bunch of strangers who may not share your values on health. You’re gonna have to compromise, depending on where you want to go. If you can drive, drive; make a road trip out of it. If you’re going further, well, you’re just gonna have to deal with the plane. At least the seating will be less cramped. Also, depending on where you go and where you’re coming from, you may be required to undergo a two-week quarantine. So if you only have a few days for a vacation, don’t try to go to one of those places.
Secondly, lodging. You’re options are hotels, Airbnb, or, depending on your location, camping. Hotels, especially in current circumstances, have been trying to be as clean as possible. Nevertheless, you should be vigilant yourself, wiping down flat surfaces that are touched frequently with disinfectant wipes. Sheets and towels are probably fine, as they get washed frequently. Airbnb bookings are, of course, cheaper, but if you wanna book an Airbnb, you need to consult with the host on how seriously they take cleanliness. Airbnb has policies for this, but nobody’s perfect. Camping is a great circumstantial option, since you’ll be outside and far away from other people. Just remember that if you do get sick, medical services may be a bit hard to reach.

Finally, attractions. Indoor attractions like theaters and museums are opening at a reduced capacity, which is good, but being indoors does increase your vulnerability to viral agents. Something outdoors like the beach would be better, as long as you maintain social distance. Amusement parks like Disney World are opening as well, though even at a reduced capacity, there’s gonna be a lot of people wandering around and touching things. Above all else, just remember the core tenets: social distancing, wash your hands, don’t touch your face, and try to wear a mask as much as possible. It ain’t gonna be a traditional one, but we can make a vacation work.
